Now that a large portion of speaking engagements may not be as hassle-free as logging onto your computer, maximizing your time is more important than ever. Knowing how to make the most out of live conferences might feel like a distant memory, but these tips and tricks will help you fully reap the rewards of your upcoming, in-person speaking engagement.
Before + During Your Event
Dust off Your Business Cards (or create a digital one!): You may have changed careers, companies, or roles since your last speaking opportunity, so it’s time to invest in new cards or bring them out of storage. It’s easy to overlook the importance of the trusty business card, but it’s one of the most direct ways to leave a lasting and clear impression after networking.
Looking to make your networking more eco-friendly? Try creating a digital business card featuring everyone’s favorite, post-pandemic tool, the QR code. Another great option is to connect on LinkedIn when you meet someone on the show floor.
Reach out to Fellow Speakers on the Agenda: Make sure to take advantage of the agenda when looking to see if any fellow speakers or moderators you would like to connect with are planning to attend.
If the event does not facilitate a more formal one-on-one meeting request system, scheduling time to chat in person could be as simple as reaching out on LinkedIn or asking the event organizer for a speaker’s contact information.
Actually Attend Optional Networking Events: Most attendees are feeling ready to socialize again, and many conferences are taking note by making time in the schedule for good, old-fashioned networking.
Poke around the event website or speaking invitation to see if there are any open dinners, networking events, social hours, meet and greets, etc. that fit with your schedule. It’s easy to opt for doing your own thing at a conference, but networking events are designed with you specifically in mind and are usually more than worth your time.

Don’t Forget You Can Attend the Full Conference: Maybe you have finished your session and find yourself wondering, “now what?” The answer is: attend the remainder of the conference!
Your invitation to speak likely gives you access to the full event (and maybe even a comped ticket for a guest too), and spending your free time attending other thought leaders’ sessions is a great way to learn something new.
Post-Event
Follow up with New Contacts: Instead of leaving crumpled up business cards at the bottom of your bag for the next few months, digitize your new contacts’ information by creating a simple spreadsheet on your computer or giving them a follow on LinkedIn. To personalize your follow up later on, It’s also helpful to designate which event you met the contact through.
Head to Social Media: There are few things as long-lasting as a social media post! Make sure to utilize the event’s social graphics or a photo you snapped from the conference to post across your social media (find our full list of social media tips here!). If your session is live streamed or recorded, keep the social buzz going by sharing when your session video is posted.
