Developing a Crush on Code: DeveloperWeek 2020

They say there’s no better way to treat that special someone on Valentine’s Day than gifting them hearts, flowers, and chocolates. However, at DeveloperWeek 2020, speakers and attendees showed their love and affection for their favorite Valentine:  their code. This year’s DeveloperWeek brought together speakers and attendees who joined to celebrate developer innovations transforming the tech industry.

On February 12-14, the cred team headed across the bay to the Oakland Convention Center, to hear from leaders disrupting with code. As the largest developer conference and event series to hit the Bay Area, DeveloperWeek draws more than 8,000 developers, engineers, software architects, and executives from 70+ countries, gathering to discover the latest in technologies, languages, platforms, and tools. At this year’s event, love for innovation was in the air, with 17 keynotes and featured speakers from companies including  Ripple, LiveRamp, HackerRank, Thumbtack (all cred speaking clients), StubHub, Intuit, and Twilio sharing stories on-stage.

Some Crush-Worthy Highlights from the Stage:

Thumbtack: Matchmaking in Real-Time
Neha Agarwal, Thumbtack’s Director of Engineering, discussed how her team is providing the ultimate matchmaking tool between professionals and customers, by meeting the demand for a real-time search engine. She dove deep into how her team is transforming the Thumbtack search engine to be an “instant” model in order to connect their pros with customers in an efficient and effective manner while scaling their product. Agarwal shared how Thumbtack provides the perfect match, through a variety of categories like job preferences, rankings, and quote sheets, giving customers the ability to effortlessly find the right pro for their needs.

LiveRamp:  It’s Not You, It’s All of Us
Andrew McVeigh, Chief Architect at LiveRamp, shared the secrets of strategically scaling a system to encourage team growth, and how to organize teams to ensure their workflow is seamless. He presented insights on how technical leaders can use strategic architecture to make rapid progress that can calibrate, attract, and keep top talent. Andrew discussed his experience growing a team from 80 to 800 as a Technical Lead at Riot Games, and how he applies those lessons learned to the growing engineering team at LiveRamp.

Ripple: Making Money Moves
David Schwartz, CTO of Ripple, discussed the challenges of payments, and how, by building with blockchain and digital assets, developers can transform today’s fragmented payments infrastructure, making moving money instantly across any payments network the reality for everyone. Schwartz highlighted how all developers can make their mark and improve payments, to enable a future of easy transactions between anyone, anywhere, using any currency.

HackerRank: Sourcing Talent from the Heart
The industry reports often on technical and business trends, but culture and talent trends within the developer community are often less discussed. HackerRank CEO and Co-Founder Vivek Ravisankar asked the audience to reflect on their satisfaction with their own compensation, the necessary technical qualifications for new projects, and the process of sourcing new technical talent. Highlighting results from a survey conducted last year, Vivek pinpointed ways in which the developer community can be more purposeful when growing their teams.

A Lovely Date with DeveloperWeek
Three days of speaking engagements ended with a weekend Hackathon and several workshops for the developer community. DeveloperWeek isn't simply for the people wanting to share a behind-the-scenes look at their code, but rather, anyone wanting to share their experience  working in a world of disruptive technology

Similar to falling in love, DeveloperWeek (and crafting your love for code) is something you need to experience on your own. It is a unique experience you won’t soon forget.
